5 Common Uses of Nano Silica

Silicon dioxide nanoparticles (SiO2), also known as silica nanoparticles or Nano silica is a white powdery substance. The substance has a high melting and boiling point which makes it suitable for use in various industries. Nano silica is also used for research purposes as it highly stable and has very low toxicity. The various uses of Nano silica include:

  1. Paint: Adding nano silica to paint greatly reduces drying time and improves suspension stability, the strength of combination between substrate and coating and the degree of finish as well. Gloss, surface hardness, adhesion, and solvent resistance are also significantly improved by adding nano silica.
  2. Plastic: When dispersed into polypropylene (PP), polyvinylchloride (PVC) and other plastic raw materials, nano silica enhances strength, toughness, wear resistance and aging resistance of plastics.
  3. Cement: Performance of concrete can be enhanced by adding 2-5% nano silica instead of ordinary concrete materials. Nano silica is usually applied to high strength cement-based pavement materials to increase the physical and mechanical properties, and durability of cement paste.
  4. Food Packaging: Nano silica significantly reduces water vapour permeability and oxygen permeability. This protects food from deterioration, prolongs shelf life and maintains food quality. Nano silica combined with aluminium is used for cans for beverages and protects the metal surface from oxidizing and reduces its reflectivity.
  5. Food Additive: Nano silica is used as an anti-caking agent in common food products, including fruit and dehydrated vegetable powders, soup and sauce powders and many more. It is also used as fining agent for wines to prevent protein precipitation.
